Gamescom 2025

This year, I had the chance to experience Gamescom not only as a visitor but also as a volunteer at the Indie Arena Booth, one most interesting and vibrant areas of the entire event. I first heard about the opportunity through my university and immediately applied. When I received the confirmation that I’d been accepted, I was beyond excited.

On my way to Cologne.

Volunteering turned out to be an amazing experience. I was assigned to the Technical Support Team, working alongside two other volunteers to solve all kinds of technical issues throughout the week. The organization of the booth was excellent, and the whole team was incredibly supportive. As volunteers, we were allowed early access to the convention halls, received T-shirts and free hot dogs, and even had a private lounge area to rest for a few minutes between tasks.

What I loved most was the people I met. Many of the other volunteers were also Game Design students from different universities, and it was super inspiring to exchange experiences in the industry we had made so far and our future plans. I’ll definitely apply again next year.

While I didn’t play that many games myself, Anno: Pax Romana was a Game I couldn't miss left a good impression on me. The indie section in general in Hall 10.2 was highlight, filled with creative projects and passionate developers showing what small teams can achieve. I also got around to watch the Prime League Finals on the last day!

Before Gamescom officially started, I also spent a day at the Devcom Conference, where I had some very fascinating conversation with developers from Meta about the Unity Building Blocks for VR/AR applications.

Overall, the trip was absolutely worth it. Even though Gamescom continues to grow – sometimes in a negative way – for me the true value of an event like Gamescom lies elsewhere anyway. Meeting new and old people, sharing ideas, and being surrounded by others who love creating games as much as I do is the reason I love Gamescom and will go again next year!
